Manufactured homes are great, but just like any other house, you need to take some steps to make sure your manufactured home is secure from burglars. No matter how safe your neighborhood is, thieves are out there and will take any opportunity to strike and burglarize your home. Here are some tips to help you make your manufactured home and community safer.

Outside
There are many things to be done outside of your manufactured home to help protect it from thieves. Motion-sensitive lights in the front and back of your house are a great way to scare off any potential burglars. Make sure that the lights are not accessible from a deck or steps, that way a thief can't remove the bulbs. Planting thorny shrubs around your home will provide a little barrier. Keep your shrubs trimmed so thieves cannot hide behind them either.

Make sure that your doors are strong and secure. Older manufactured homes have doors with the hinges on the outside. This is dangerous. All your outside doors should open to the inside. If they don't, I would strongly suggest you change this because some could take the door off the hinges. Make sure all sheds and outbuildings are secured with locks or deadbolts.

If you have a dog, put up a "Beware of Dog" sign. Even if your dog is small and would not scare off anyone, put up a sign. The thieves don't know this. Even if you don't have a dog, a sign could help a burglar move on to the next house.

Not So Common Sense
Don't leave a spare key outside your house. Thieves know to look under plants, welcome mats and fake rocks. Instead, leave a spare house key in your vehicle or with a trusted neighbor. Also, make sure that any tools and ladders are secured inside a locked shed or inside your house. You don't want to assist anyone with a ladder to break in through a window. Make sure that the skirting of your manufactured home is secure and sturdy so potential thieves do not have a place to hide.

Flat-screen TVs and video game consoles are great, but do not leave the empty boxes on the street for garbage men to pick up several days later. This is just advertising that you have expensive items inside your house. Cut them up if you can or take them somewhere to be trashed.
 
Something else you can do is to not put your name on your mailbox. If remove it if your name is already on the mailbox. Burglars can look up the address and name and get your phone number. Then they could call to see if you are home when they want to break in.
